Yes, I think cell phone usage should be banned while driving period. That includes texting and talking on the cell phone unless it is hands free.

How can anyone need a message that bad. All my close calls have been with teenage girls texting while driving. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS??

No, we don't need more laws. Although it is irresponsible to text while driving, anything that distracts you from driving is dangerous. Another "law" will not stop irresponsible behavior. If so, we should have a law against driving with one hand, changing the stereo channel, singing with the radio, eating while driving, talking to other passengers in the car, thinking about anything other than driving while driving...all distractions that take your mind off the road. If I am driving erratically, pull me over, otherwise let me get to where I am going.

If a law saves a life is it bad? Some who are against it should think how they would feel if their teenage daughter ran over a kid because she was texting her friend. Most other states have them why not us.

I'm torn on this one. On one hand I think there should be a law banning texting while driving. On the other hand, I agree with Pam, above. Another law isn't going to change some drivers' irresponsible behavior. I mean, there is a law to wear your seat belt (which saves lives) and some drivers still don't do that!

I would like to see a law banning texting while driving but that will not stop anyone unless there are major consequences like 3 violations and your license is revoked for a year. It is just as dangerous to drink and drive as it is to text and drive. I think we should all use hands-free devices only while driving. If we had harsher penalties for seat belt violations then fewer would not wear them.

Lets hope some of the new elected politicians are listening. Just today I saw a young lady come across two lanes without knowing then jerk back. When I passed her she was STILL texting!!! I agree with the previous comment WHERE ARE THE PARENTS!!

That's a very good question...I would hope that as adults, we would put our safety and the safety of others at the top of the list while driving!! But if we make it against the law to text while driving, then we need to take radios, heaters, air conditioners and GPS units out of cars too. These are all distractions when driving!!!! And if we do that, we better take out passengers too because talking in a car especially to children is a distraction too!! Drivers need to use COMMON SENSE when driving and not allow ANYTHING to distract them!!!

The best solution is for the United States of America to construct a separate TEXTING LANE on all highway systems. 12 foot walls of Super Rubber on either side should keep traffic and meaningless communication flowing.

Yes it should be a law that NO one should drive with a phone in their hand at all, and yes this includes texting or talking on the phone. Hands free all the way!!!!

It's a shame that we have to consider passing a law because some people have NO COMMON SENSE. You wouldn't read a book while driving, you wouldn't prop your laptop on the dash and work while driving, why do people think it's ok to text while driving? The day I'm in an accident because someone else was texting while driving will be the day I end up in jail for assault. Eyes on the road bucko!

I already feel bad for the person that causes the death or injury of my baby boy because they were texting....I would have to put them down...do yourselves a favor and don't risk texting as you may run into me.

Comments YES!!!!! It should be against the law all across America. I cannot count the times the I myself have went across a double yellow line ran off the road a little,and almost cause several accidents because of texting. My daughter has just gotten her licenses and of all the things that could happen to a new driver texting while driving is the one thing I find myself beggin her over and over again to NOT even look at her screen while driving if anything at all I beg to just answer calls,I tell her if shes not worried about getting herself hurt to think of the others she may have to live with killing because whatever she needed to tell someone couldn't wait a few minutes.

Yes! Texting is the same as using any computer. You just can't do it and keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.

We definitely need a law to texting while driving. I had to stop getting on to the interstate because of road construction. There was only one lane of traffic, so I had to wait for the interstate traffic to pass before getting on the road. While I was waiting, a car came up behind me really fast and laid on the horn when they had to stop. As I went to get on the road, the driver cut me off and continued to blow his horn. As he went by, I saw that he had a cell phone in his hand. He had NO clue what was going on or why I was stopped because he was texting. I'm sure he didn't see the big orange sign that read YEILD! To top it all off, there was a police presence because it was a construction zone and no action was taken.

Yes, I think texting on a cell phone while driving should be illegal. I was almost hit by a driver who was doing this very same thing and it scared me to death almost. so yes, texting while driving should be illegal.

Yes there should be a law against texting while driving. I was headed home with my son one evening and a JanCare ambulance was running off the road then crossing into the other lane. When their inabilty to hold their speed made it no longer possible to stay behing them we started to pass. That is when my son saw that the ambulance driver was texting! Add to that the fact that we were then cut off by a truck driver because he was aware of a wreck just below the Lost Creek exit and decided he was going to do his own traffic control, it all made for a very stressful ride home. The ambulance driver was unaware of what was going on. The woman hadn't put her siren on and wasn't responding to the accident ahead. Even though all the traffic was moving into the left lane she continued texting while passing everyone on the right. Texting while driving is just plan stupid - don't do it and stop your friends from doing it.

Yes, absolutely! Problem is it would be so easy to get away with it without being caught. Every car could not possibly be watched but I do think there should be a hefty fine if caught text messaging....

I CAN'T BELEIVE THIS IS EVEN A SERIOUS QUESTION!!!! DUH LAWMAKERS, WAKEUP!!!!! This law should have passed a long time ago. People are addicted to texting, like an alcoholic is to drinking. With either one, you can NOT be paying attention and in control of your vehicle!

cell phones are good and bad. good= if u need help u have a phone. bad= is your textinng or talkinng while driving. 50/50 situation.

I would love to see a law against texting and talking on HAND-HELD phones while driving. I have had drivers coming right at me head on because they were on their phone!!...Also just this past Tuesday a man in a white car driving in Charleston was driving slow in the middle lane...and yes he was texting and not paying attention to where he was going...It does not matter how old you are, these are dangerous practices.

This does not need to be a law. Are we going to issue situations for not using common sense? It will not prevent people from texting and driving parents need to block teen text messaging and adults need to think.

I've had more than one close call and even had someone with a phone up to their ear run a red light just as I was starting to pull out onto the highway. Why are people so attached to their cell phones, what is so important that it can't wait until you reach your destination. I totally agree with Oprah who says we should all put it either in the back seat or trunk and concentrate on your driving. How many people have to be injured or killed before someone does something about this.
